Launch Bourgeois Leftovers, The Reader

Please join us at San Serriffe art book shop for the launch of Bourgeois Leftovers, a reader published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at de Appel arts centre, curated by the participants in the 2012-2013 de Appel Curatorial Programme (Karima Boudou, Kari Cwynar, Angela Jerardi, Srajana Kaikini, Florencia Portocarrero, and Alexandra Stock).

During the exhibition, held April 20-June 16, 2013, thirty-two Dutch and Belgian paintings from the Van Abbemuseum’s collection, produced during the interbellum period, were hosted at de Appel arts centre, Amsterdam and twenty-five contemporary artists and collaborators were invited to engage with them. With as many as fifty-five participants in the show, including the painters of the thirty-two paintings and the contributors to the public programme, along with six curators, the exhibition set the stage for diverse voices across historical periods to intersect, contest, and collaborate with each other.

The commissioned works and performances are represented in the reader anecdotally through conversations or transcripts that took place before, during or after the exhibition, and supplemented with additional essays and interviews. The reader maps itself around keywords such as institutional policies, collections, value, leftovers and their historical relevance, class-based aesthetics, ideological and linguistic infiltrations, and the status of art history in relation to the contemporary in a context expanding beyond the European paradigm into international contexts such as Morocco, India, and Latin America. Readers can use the index of terms at the end of each text as a cue to construct her own reading experience, much in the way the exhibition proposed a range of subjective interpretations.
