Anna Bitkina and Gluklya, The Union of Artists and Curators

13.05.2016
de Appel, Prins Hendrikkade 142, Amsterdam

The project The Union of Artists and Curators is a performative presentation of a script that is composed from e-mail correspondence, conversations and interviews of curators and artists that are concerned about and willing to study ethical issues that they faced in relation with various art institutions. It is a professional exercise and an autonomous art work at the same time, which serves as a discursive platform.

This event is part of the extensive Public Programme that accompanies Rien ne va plus? Faites vos jeux!

Entrance regular + 3 euro

A combiticket is available for 15 euro (excluding the entrance to the exhibition). This combiticket gives entrance to all the events related to Untitled (two takes on crisis).

The work aims to articulate backstage nuances of curatorial and artistic practises and brings into a public discussion such problems like cultural colonialism, censorship and freedom of artistic expression, political and financial power of institutions, possibilities of art and power of cultural capital. At the same time this project helps to create conditions for a collective therapy to overcome anger, frustration and emotional breakdown that were caused by unresolved and often unspoken issues.

Invited actors will read and sing parts of the script. The reading will be accompanied by some performative elements, sounds, light and music. The performance will be concluded by a manifesto of a prospective union of artists and curators, which will suggest a rejection of subordination and abuse of authority in the creative process. Now when an active discourse about social engagement and new working principles for art institutions is taking place it is especially important to raise again these issues.
