Towards new integrations with the curatorial and artistic fields

De Appel arts centre and TAAK are pleased to present the two-day program Surrounding Education, focusing on how certain notions of education and pedagogy have been merging with the artistic and curatorial fields. During this weekend, Mônica Hoff, Yoeri Meessen, Priscila Fernandes, Erick Beltrán, Ane Hjort Guttu, Frans-Willem Korsten and Juan Canela will delve into the limits and boundaries of these neighbor disciplines by sharing their experiences and most recent projects.

Location:
TAAK
Frans de Wollantstraat 84
1018 SC Amsterdam

Price: €15 (including vegetarian lunch on Sunday 7th)
Reservation required: reservation [at] deappel.nl

Time:

Saturday 6 June 3 - 7 pm

Sunday 7 June 11am - 7 pm

On Sunday 7th, TAAK will provide a lunch event for the symposium as part of its educational program at De Boe, a primary school from the neighborhood. This will be organised by artist and scientist Masha Ru, who investigates the phenomenon of eating earth-based substances. This special lunch will provide the participants with the opportunity to taste a non conventional dish prepared with fresh and natural ingredients.

This series of talks come from the need to further explore and debate how the curatorial and artistic fields are being re-shaped by educational endeavours. The particular emphasis set on the “educational turn” during the last years lead us to reflect on certain in between projects, where curators and artists work together in a direct way with a particular community. Mônica Hoff and Yoeri Meessen will share their experiences as artist and educator during the last six years in the Mercosur Biennial, Brazil, and in Manifesta. Having two completely different contexts as points of departure, they will reflect from a curatorial perspective on the implications and responsibilities of their work, towards local communities, schools, artists and general public. Professor Frans-Willem Korsten will present the ongoing project: Cartographies of Acting Pedagogically, developed together with Master students from the Piet Zwart Institute. In an attempt to reply Honorato Cayo´s question, what education does the artistic practices refer to? Ane Jort Guttu, Erick Beltran and Priscila Fernandes will share their own research and latest artistic projects, and Juan Canela will expand on his long-term curatorial project Lesson 0, developed in Fundaciò Joan Miró in Barcelona together with Ane Aguirre and finishing this year.

TENT Rotterdam has a solo exhibition with Priscila Fernandes from 1 May - 5 July 2015. This exhibition by brings together a selection of her recent installation pieces and exhibits newly developed work. Fernandes questions the influence of artistic processes such as creativity and non-conformism in education, labor and play and how these are included for both practical and ideological reasons in her work.
