With a background in dance and experimental comedy, Michael Portnoy (1971, Washington DC) switched camps to the field of visual arts around 2006. His performance-based practice is realized in a variety of media, from sculpture, participatory installation and curation, to painting, writing, theatre and video.

For the exhibition at de Appel arts centre Portnoy has “installed” another artist, namely Rán Flygenring, within the exhibition space for the purpose of relentlessly ‘roasting’ and ‘improving’ all the other works in the show, also to produce new artworks and new breeds of art inspired by the works in the show. By means of their cooperation, Portnoy and The Roaster metaphorically put all the artworks of the exhibition ‘on fire’ with unpredictable results. The goal is to accelerate the evolution of contemporary art. Rán Flygenring was selected through an open call procedure.

Her residency in Amsterdam is kindly supported by the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy.
