De Appel Archive is closed because of the corona virus but that doesn’t mean archiving has stopped. Various materials in the archive have already been digitized and requests keep coming in. The Archive will supply everything that is possible to support the curious, who use their time at home to further important research.
While de Appel is working with artists we generate all kinds of materials that naturally flow into the archive. We also regularly receive (digital) materials that enrich the past and present of de Appel and connect all the stories and materials together.
You are welcome to submit your additions for consideration by the Remote Archivist.
And when, while archiving, we stumble on something special we will share it on this page (please scroll down or use the search function to explore).

Will keep you informed,
Your Remote Archivist

A couple of weeks ago I received a nice email from GJ de Rook

-Hi Nell
-they were in nooks and crannies but especially in piles, my white ravens.
-it may be that a few more pop up but here my current list:
-gr,
-gj

De Witte Raaf (The White Raven) is a magazine about recent and contemporary art, distributed free of charge in the Dutch-speaking area. De Appel is a distribution point for the paper version of the Witte Raaf - the collection should be complete - but anyhow, some issues have disappeared from the shelves. You can download most publications on their website, but it is good to keep the paper version in de Appel Archive. The newsprint darkens with time, making the stack a kind of timeline. Reading the paper de Witte Raaf at the library table with a coffee is a beautiful, recurring ritual… o dear I miss that.

A long list came with the email. I then emailed him my list of missing issues of De Witte Raaf. Then, this message followed:

--Hi Nell,
--today a box of white ravens flew to schipluidenlaan.
--you can do whatever you want with it.
--gr
--gj

After a very short visit to De Appel, I found, among the enormous pile of mail from the last two months, the box with White Ravens. A good addition gj, thanks very much for this!

If you are also cleaning up - the White Ravens issues that are still missing in de Appel are
1 t/m 33, 25 t/m 40, 46-48, 52, 80, 86 t/m 89, 91, 93, 96, 99, 108, 137 t/m 140, 153, 161, 164-165, 170, 178, 183, 187, 197

In these times of working from home, I see and speak to my neighbors more than usual. It's crazy with front doors that open directly onto a street. You go out, jump on your bike and disappear. You go back inside and you disappear again - especially in winter. Now we visit each other more; to ask how it’s going or just for a chat. Both my neighbors live in these houses as long as I do. Since 1999. Last week I saw my neighbor spring cleaning. We had a chat, and then out of a pile of objects he pulled – he is an artist – a maquette. A maquette of de Appel at Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 10, he told me. Made when he was at art school in his first year, in 1990, immediately to make a bold proposal for an exhibition. I thought it was a beautiful model. My neighbor told me that the hole in the ceiling between the 1st and 2nd floors provided a crazy sound experience, It was similar to a sound hole in a Spanish guitar, which fascinated him.

Later I realized that de Appel only moved to Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 10 in January 1994. Before that, the Institute for Contemporary Art was in the building. In 1990 de Appel was still housed at the Prinseneiland, where it found accommodation after our first location on Brouwersgracht. The void in the ceiling on the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat was later closed. But at the opening exhibition “The Spine” you can still see it in the photo of Pepe Espaliú's work. The neighbor and I now see each other more regularly and I hope that next time he will talk about what he wanted to show in the maquette.

Last Monday I received this friendly email from Fabian Kassner from Leipzig. He is happy to share his intriguing theses with us: 'Der Künstler als Krimineller' (Universität Leipzig, Fakultät für Geschichte, Kunst- und Orientwissenschaften Institut für Kunstgeschichte, 2019)
This is a good way to keep the memory of Ulay alive. De Appel will proudly include it in the archive.
