Series 08: Matt Hinkley / Barbara Bloom

Matt Hinkley, artist and owner of bookstore BOOKS@columbusplein in Amsterdam, has been working in the archive of de Appel since 2021. His archive work is as meticulously precise – with so much love for the book, the paper, the design, the concept and the meaning – as he runs his bookshop. He became mesmerized with the work by Barbara Bloom that looms everywhere in the archive from 1974 until now. The work is not always present in an obvious way, but appears again and again in image, word, design and afterimage, making relationships throughout the archive. These reminiscences of Bloom’s significance to de Appel have a way of slowly surfacing, appearing in places you least expect, steadily gaining meaning and becoming placeable, interconnectable and understandable.
