NODE #3
NODE #3 sound-based works at De Appel
A series of performances and interactive events revolving around contemporary assaults on the auditory will take place in the auditorium of Broedplaats Lely. 20 APR
At the opening reception of Brace for Impact, artist duo echo+seashell will debut their new musical performance I’d Rather be in a Spaceship than on a Sinking Titanic. Part retro-space landing, part Chanel no. 5, this piece is a futuristic self-portrait of cherubic space angels floating in the universe with only their break-dancing shadows left on earth. 05 MAY
For Cilia Erens, the world is a series of unexplored sound spaces. Each sound has its own identity that becomes manifest only when taken out of sync with sight. Erens uses binaural field recordings to sensitise audiences to their closest and most immediate sound environments. On 5 May 2018, the artist will take De Appel visitors for a sonic field walk around Lelylaan to investigate the soundscape of functionalist urban developments as Amsterdam's Nieuw West - where De Appel's is situated - is a perfect example of modernist urban design. Two audio tours preceded by an introductory talk by Cilia Erens will be offered to visitors. Please sign up for one of the tours (14:00, 16:30) by e-mail via cpdeappel [at] gmail.com 14 MAY
Each year, millions of tons of waste are discarded from all over the world and end up in landfills in the poorest parts of the globe. Jacob Kirkegaard premieres Thrum, a multi-channel sound portrait of one such site in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The work aurally zooms in on the industrial section of Merkato, Africa’s largest outdoor market. In the iron and metal sub-section, hundreds of men spend all day reshaping oil drums. By foregrounding the sounds of consumption, Kirkegaard’s recordings present a visceral reminder of the dejected matter of capitalist society. During the evening event Steim will present a performance by ROBERT VAN HEUMEN, an improvising musician and composer using an extended laptop-instrument to perform highly immersive and hyper-dynamic electro-acoustic music. Robert considers live sampling one of his main tools. With a joystick and other tactile controllers, he manipulates live sampled source sounds gesturally and reworks them within open-ended narratives. For his solo set in the BRACE FOR IMPACT program Robert will stretch the dynamic range of his music in time and space and focus on the inner workings of sampled and re-sampled material.
