Saturday School with Femke Diercks
de Appel Boys´School

Sara van der Heide's Hollands Kabinet from the exhibition Fluiten in het Donker becomes subject to a close reading by Femke Diercks, specialist in 17th century Dutch furniture. Every day, since the formation of the current Dutch Cabinet Rutte on October 14, 2010 Sara van der Heide paints one antique Dutch cabinet, and will continue to do so as long as it remains in power.

The Saturday School lecture will give a brief overview of the history of the Dutch cabinet, through the cabinets that are a part of Sara van der Heide’s work. Thus, emphasizing the cultural richness and diversity of this particular category of Dutch furniture history.

In light of the recent announcements made by the state secretary of culture Halbe Zijlstra on behalf of the current government, the artist Sara van der Heide feels that it is urgent for her work to function as a platform whereupon voices of dissent gather. Hence, the event will begin with the reading of an open letter written by Jeremiah Day in response to the recent cuts in the Cultural sector. His letter places these politcal plans within an ideological and socio-political framework.

Femke Diercks (1984) studied art history at the University of Groningen. After an internship at the Amsterdam Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem (Massachusetts), she received her Masters Degree for a thesis describing the collections of the Amsterdam Patrician family Backer. As junior curator of Decorative Arts at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, a position she has held since 2009, she works on the Dutch as well as European applied arts collections of the museum. This fall she will join Museum de Lakenhal in Leiden.

Please note that the finissage events of the exhibition “Fluiten in het Donker” have been moved to the Saturday 25th of June due to the mass protest action against Dutch cuts to culture organised for the 26th at the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam.
