Under the spell of Leonora Carrington:
who was this surrealist artist?

Leonora Carrington paninting.

In the run-up to the Venice Biennale, Amsterdam Art in collaboration with De Appel, organises an evening about Leonora Carrington. The theme of this year’s Biennale, The Milk of Dreams, comes from the title of the book of the same name by this surrealist artist and writer. Who was Leonora Carrington? Why are more and more art lovers becoming fascinated by her work? And why does Carrington's work feel so contemporary?

Nina Folkersma, director of Amsterdam Art and curator of the exhibition The Tears of Eros in Centraal Museum Utrecht (2020), in which the work of Leonora Carrington was shown in the Netherlands for the first time, talks to art historian Tessel Bauduin and artist Eva Bartels.

Tessel Bauduin is a historian of art and culture and has various publications on Surrealism to her name, including Surrealism and the Occult (2014) and Surrealism, Occultism and Politics. In Search of the Marvellous (2018). Eva Bartels is a visual artist, actress and performer who last year created a solo performance about the life and work of Leonora Carrington in her own studio.

The evening takes place at the 13th of April at De Appel.
