24H Nieuw-West with Maartje Fliervoet

14.09.2019
13:00–19:00
de Appel, Schipluidenlaan 12, Amsterdam

Can we continue in our ways of thinking about and acting upon our surroundings?

Can we approach oceans and freshwater bodies as an ecosystem with a self-reflective and connective character?

Are bodies of water really as alien to us as they appear?

Despite their dynamics, bodies of water appear to be extremely structured;

rather, it seems to be our thinking that reduces them to formlessness.

Waveness testifies to these issues. At De Appel, we will further investigate the water in the nearby Sloterplas and bring it into contact with photo paper. The water reacts with the available light and the barite paper, which immediately deforms and changes colour, forming composition on the print independently of human intervention; the actors jointly form an image. To emphasize the physicality of this experience, a number of prints are enlarged and translated into jacquard woven cloths.

During 24H Nieuw-West, Fliervoet's previous work made with seawater will be presented on the staircase of Broedplaats Lely. Some of these canvases are prints of seawater with microalgae and moist beach sand, while others include references to stromatolites, geomancy, navigation, cup and ring marks, and cartography.

Afterwards, you may experiment together with artist Maartje Fliervoet using water from Sloterplas lake to create your own "water tableaus". After the workshop, these water tables will be incorporated into textile works that will be part of the Waveness II presentation, on display at De Appel, in December 2019.
