In autumn of 2019, De Appel hosts the first solo show of Amsterdam based artist Patricia Kaersenhout. Her installation is a response to Judy Chicago's now-canonical piece The Dinner Party from the 1970s, which consisted of table sets dedicated to important women and goddesses to emphasize the underrepresentation of women in our history and social discourse. Kaersenhout's Guess Who's Coming to Dinner Too? departs from The Dinner Party, an ode to women from antiquity until the present, and mainly consists of American and European heroines. Kaersenhout wants to challenge the horizon of (art) history by shining light on the underrepresented or neglected stories of 38 Black women and women of colour.

The centrepiece of the installation is the textile work on the table. This textile work creates connections between the different stories of the women who are represented but also to the history of slavery when sewing secret messages into quilts would be used as a strategy among slaves to aid each other escape. Together with the artist, we will further investigate what message the students want to leave in a quilt if they want to help a "refugee" today. Why do people flee today? Where do they go to? Can we help? With these questions in mind, the students themselves can sew a secret message into a quilt. The messages will be assembled in a common quilt that can be hung in the school after the workshop.
