Monika Szewczyk took office on May 1st, 2019 and will leave de Appel at the end of this month, after three exceptional and intensive years. Szewczyk and the de Appel team realised leading projects with (inter)national artists. Together with the team she ensured that de Appel once again received structural funding from the city of Amsterdam, in addition to support from the Mondriaan Fund for public programming, Hartwig Foundation and Ammodo for the Curatorial Programme, alongside project funding and a campaign to refurbish the Aula at Broedplaats Lely as de Appel's main exhibition space.

Szewczyk managed to realise a diverse program for the public of de Appel. The current Curatorial Programme participants were co-selected by Szewczyk and the upcoming exhibitions of Pope.L and Inas Halabi were initiated by her. We are delighted that Szewczyk continues to be involved as an advisor for Pope.L in his large-scale and singular project.

The supervisory board has found Huib Haye van der Werf willing to lead the team as interim director, together with the business director. In the short term, the supervisory board will start a recruitment process for a new director.
