The Supervisory Board of de Appel extends Director Lara Khaldi’s contract for three more years

de Appel's team, autumn 2024

The Supervisory Board of de Appel is pleased to announce the extension of Artistic Director Lara Khaldi’s contract for an additional three years, affirming its confidence in her collective work with the team and the institution’s continued relevance as a vital site for critical, translocal, and context driven artistic practice.

Since joining de Appel in 2022, with her colleagues, Khaldi has led the organisation with intellectual rigour, care, and a strong commitment to decolonial, collective and intersectional approaches to curating and pedagogy. As Lara Khaldi’s tenure as Artistic Director at de Appel is extended, the institution enters a transformative four year phase grounded in a curatorial vision that centres land and housing, governance, and grassroots (art) economies. The programme reimagines de Appel as a host for collective experimentation, redistribution, and embedded art practices, connecting artistic production with everyday life, education, and social justice. de Appel prioritises long term collaborations, artist-led research, and participatory models across its curatorial, educational, and neighbourhood initiatives. From the launch of the Lumbung Practice Curatorial Programme last year to landmark projects on placemaking, anti-apartheid legacies, and transvestment economies, the programme positions de Appel as a catalyst between artistic autonomy and shared civic imagination.

Among the upcoming and new projects are: de Appel Kiosk, where art projects concerned with questions around alternative economies run at street markets in Amsterdam; the current, two year programmes of de Appel Curatorial Programme/Lumbung Practice Temporary Master Programme in collaboration with Sandberg Instituut and Gudskul; to new research around how funding has shaped de Appel as an art institution in the past 50 years; to actively transforming the institution into a space where children and caregivers are not just accommodated but invited to reshape the institution’s culture with the upcoming solo exhibition CacchHo CucchhA by Mercedes Azpilicueta, and more.
