Open call: de Appel Kiosk

de Appel is welcoming proposals for the upcoming summer edition of its market Kiosk. As part of de Appel’s structural thematics in the coming years, we explore alternative small economies and art economy, both as sites such as street markets and thematically by asking questions about funding and institutional autonomy.

We see urban markets as vibrant places where diverse cultures gather, becoming hubs for social interaction, community building, and cultural exchange. The street market is often based on small family or cooperative stalls and the forming of social solidarity between the stall owners. Part of the de Appel Kiosk’s endeavor is to reflect on practices of exchange and barter in market economies. de Appel wishes to engage in places other than art institutions to meet people through and with artistic practices without the overt distinction between art and society. The idea of the Kiosk was inspired by our friends in the lumbung and by other initiatives from artists to sustain their collectives and participate in a wider scope of economies.

During the first edition on October 16 and 17, 2024, Waèl el Allouche developed his stall with food and art works. Metti, the name of the project, was inspired by the role of the matriarch or grandmother. The cultural initiative is rooted in food, knowledge, and communal exchange. Metti contributed to the market as a living archive by sharing food, handcrafted goods and knowledge, through storytelling, ingredients and personal artefacts. Our second edition, on December 5 and 6, 2024, was run by Espacio Estamos Bien. Their project DOOS ¡No hacemos moneda falsa! was an attempt at creating an alternative exchange that emphasizes non-monetary interactions and cooperative values. Through curated boxes sent by friends of the collective and collaborators from around the world, objects were exchanged using creative bartering methods such as favors, secrets, and spontaneous offerings.

You can find more information about past projects here and here.

For our upcoming edition in the summer of 2025, de Appel is seeking out artists or collectives based in The Netherlands to develop a project in our stall in the market which responds to questions about street market or/and art economy; and which engages with the users of the market. In addition to your work de Appel Kiosk will also include a table with merchandise by artists. The work can be a modified or new work, and it can take shape in any form you see fit (performance, workshops, printmaking, talks, objects, play, video etc.), but please keep in mind a limited production budget.
