Brace For Impact NODE #5 guided walk at Schiphol Airport, 2018. Photo by Jimena Gabriella Gauna. Het vliegtuig in Lounge 2 is een gezamenlijk project van Schiphol en KLM. Ontwerp: Kossmann de Jong. Uitvoering: Kloosterboer decor. Het idee is dat kinderen voor de vlucht energie kwijt kunnen. Er is heel bewust gekozen voor een speelobject zonder schermen. Het ontwerp bestaat uit een Learjet (privévliegtuig gekocht op een vliegtuig kerkhof in de VS). Dit vliegtuig is helemaal gestript en opnieuw opgebouwd met een knalgele cockpit waar kinderen even piloot kunnen zijn. Aan de romp zijn fantasie wolken (bollen met van binnen allemaal kleuren en glitters) vastgemaakt waar kinderen kunnen klauteren. Vanuit deze bollen kun je via een regenboog glijbaan naar buiten. De Learjet delen zijn door de spuiterij van de KLM gespoten zodat je het idee krijgt in een KLM vliegtuig te spelen.

In overleg met Schiphol hebben Philips en Cofely overal de armaturen aangepast, zodat componenten makkelijk kunnen worden vervangen. Ten eerste zorgt dit voor een langere levensduur van de verlichting. En als de lampen aan het eind van hun levensduur zijn, neemt Philips ze terug om te recyclen. Volgens het concept ‘Light As a Service’ betaalt Schiphol voor de lichtprestatie, terwijl Philips eigenaar blijven van de lampen en de armaturen. Cofely doet het onderhoud, en Philips is verantwoordelijk voor het weer terugnemen van de lampen.

Footnotes is a recurring presentation format that accompanies ongoing projects at de Appel. Its aim is to build upon, comment, or deconstruct motives of the main exhibition that the latter draw upon from within de Appel Archive or from a historical perspective. This edition, Footnotes no. 4, will take place at Amsterdam’s global transport hub, Schiphol Airport. Schiphol is a technologically loaded space where standarised time overlaps with the seamless time of data flows, supposedly linear paths of progress, and scheduled timetables. What fractures these chronologies is art and the time of lived human experience. On the occasion of Brace for Impact, Nell Donkers, curator of de Appel’s Archive will host a guided walk together with Hermine Stam en Schiphol Group around Schiphol Airport to explore works of art placed there over the airport’s long history.
