The Common Sense:
An evening with Mark Fisher and Merijn Oudenampsen

For the next event in the public programme in the context of Melanie Gilligan’s project The Common Sense, Casco, De Hallen Haarlem and de Appel arts centre are very happy to be able to announce a talk by Mark Fisher. Fisher has extensively written on the ‘end of the future’ and the detrimental effects of neoliberalism and technology on society, and will reflect on the speculative scenarios Gilligan has proposed in The Common Sense. In Gilligan’s sci-fi-miniseries, society is struggling to cope with the breakdown of The Patch, a networked ‘empathy device’ that allows its users to physically experience another’s feelings.
Mark Fisher will be joined by respondent, sociologist en political scientist Merijn Oudenampsen, who has widely published on neoliberal politics and the rise of populism in Western Europe.

The talk takes place at Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy, one of the film locations of The Common Sense.

Mark Fisher is a writer and theorist. He publishes regularly on music and film, for magazines like frieze, The Wire and New Statesman. http://k-punk.abstractdynamics.org/
