The Stedelijk Museum and de Appel arts centre proudly present the launch of the new issue of the ongoing book series The Shadowfiles. This particular edition of The Shadowfiles focuses on the notion of curatorial education, revisiting de Appel arts centre’s Curatorial (Training) Programme, an educational program for emerging curators and exhibition-makers that was initiated in 1994. The book The Shadowfiles: Curatorial Education discusses this specific program in relation to other curatorial education programs worldwide, as well as the emerging discourse on curatorial education in general. During this afternoon, special guest Kate Fowle (director at large of the New York-based Independent Curators International and chief curator of Moscow’s Garage Center for Contemporary Culture) will give a keynote lecture about how the brief history of curatorial education and pedagogies in curating can be evaluated, with respect to Maria Lind’s critique of curatorial programs in her essay for The Shadowfiles.

An introduction by Ann Demeester (de Appel arts centre) and the key-note lecture by Kate Fowle will be followed by a discussion panel with Magali Arriola (Jumex collection Mexico), Annie Fletcher (Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, alumnus Curatorial Programme de Appel arts centre), Christina Li (free lance curator, alumnus Curatorial Programme de Appel arts centre) and Ruth Noack (Royal College of Art, London), moderated by Hendrik Folkerts (Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam).
