Following the success of their previous collaboration, de Appel arts centre and the University of Amsterdam jointly present the four curating seminars of the Art History M.A. course “Doing Modern & Contemporary Art”. Under the guidance of Ann Demeester and Sophie Berrebi, the students participating in the course will be introduced to basic concepts and issues in curatorial discourse. The curating seminars of the course “Doing Modern & Contemporary Art” will take place in February/April 2012, at the University of Amsterdam.

22 Feb: THE FUTURE of the audience – A case study

In the past two decades a myriad of ‘curatorial programmes’ have been set up in the wake of L’ Ecole du Magasin in Grenoble, de Appel CP in Amsterdam, The Whitney Programme in NY and CCS Bard. When they first materialized nearly twenty years ago, their appearance reflected a growing sense that curating should be regarded as embodying more than the caretaking operation that its pedagogy must entail more than the transfer of theoretical knowledge and a set of pragmatic tools. The focus however remained on the development of a set of institutional skills. Increasingly graduates from these programmes have however been stimulated to develop new exhibitions formats and curatorial models that transgress ‘traditional’ institutional parameters. How does a young generation of curators – coming from these programmes - communicate their concerns to the world ? What issues do they wish to explore and how do they develop strategies for communication, education and audience participation ? On basis of a case-study – proposed by the current participants of de Appel Curatorial Programme – this set of issues is discussed and foregrounded.
