“The manifold (after)lives of performance” part II

12–13.11.2010
Stuk Kunstencentrum, Leuven and Frascati, Nes 63, Amsterdam

In co-production with STUK Kunstencentrum (Arts Centre) (Leuven) and in cooperation with the Frascati theatre (Amsterdam) De Appel is presenting the conference “The manifold (after)lives of performance, Part II”.

During the two-day conference in Leuven and Amsterdam the “hereafter” of the performance has a central place. An international company of creators, researchers and thinkers from the visual and dramatic arts focuses on the various ways in which performance is documented, stored and collected, on the basis of lectures and case studies.

“The manifold (after)lives of performance” was launched in November 2009. The launch concentrated on the (im)possibilities of recording, documenting and archiving, re-performing and re-contextualising performances. The emphasis was on the artist and the creator of the exhibition. The second time the focus has been on the institutional perspective. How do museums and other art institutes deal with immaterial and ephemeral live actions? How do they collect and present these types of art works, and how do artists anticipate this?

The art critic and historian Sven Lütticken (NL), the creator of an exhibition on ‘re-enactment’ in contemporary art (Witte de With, 2005), will be giving a keynote lecture. The curators Jenny Schlenzka (US) and Catherine Wood (GB) will explain the collection methodology of, respectively, the MoMA in New York and the Tate Modern in London, two museums which actively purchase performances. The artist Barbara Klimova (CZ) and the freelance curator Marie de Brugerolles (FR) will look in more detail at their fascination for and presentation of the performance work of, respectively, the Czech conceptual artists of the 1970s and 1980s and the theatrical performances of American multitalented Guy de Cointet.
