CAC, Vokieciu 2, Vilnius (LT)
At the invitation of the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) in Vilnius (Lithuania), Ann Demeester (director, de Appel arts centre) and Kestutis Kuizinas (director, CAC) are curating the tenth edition of the Baltic Triennial of International Art. Titled “Urban Stories” and consisting of the main exhibition “Black Swans, True Tales and Private Truths” and the project “Vilnius COOP” it is the pinnacle contemporary art event of the national programme of "Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009". The Triennial was founded during the soviet era, in 1979, as “The Baltic Triennial of Young Fine Art in Lithuania”. Since the mid-1990s it has expanded in scope, from the Baltic-Nordic region, to become truly international. The theme of this year will complement and counteract the Vilnius culture capital year, by adding a measure of reflexiveness and even playful criticism to a stream of images and reports about Vilnius.
“Black Swans, True Tales and Private Truths”
The main exhibition, titled “Black Swans, True Tales and Private Truths” is a group show that reflects upon the fact that the Triennial is being staged in Vilnius during a time of crisis – the term 'Black Swan' refers to events that appear by complete surprise and have a major impact (coined by Nassim Taleb) – and upon the idea that every image, reconstruction or evocation of a city contains a high degree of the ‘consciously false’.
