A monthly lecture series in the English language in Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam revolving around the concept ‘new’ in the arts.

In recent decades conventional methods or institutionalized ideas on the transfer of knowledge have been challenged both from a theoretical and from an artistic perspective. The invited speakers reflect on this ‘diversification’ and examine whether or not the field of art can truly be a site for generating knowledge in a different, ‘new’ way.

Speakers

Bracha L. Ettinger (IL/FR) is a contemporary artist and a theoretician working at the intersection of art, psychoanalysis, feminine sexuality and aesthetics. Based in Paris and in Tel Aviv, Ettinger is a practicing psychoanalyst and an activist against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. Her paintings, photos, drawings and notebooks have been exhibited extensively in museums of contemporary art worldwide. For more than twenty years she has been elaborating a new ‘matrixial’ theory and language with major aesthetical, analytic, ethical and political implications that have transformed contemporary debates in art history and cultural studies. Ettinger's ideas present the hope that identities do not have to be achieved either sacrificially or at someone else's expense. Her book “The Matrixial Borderspace” (2006) brings together essays from 1994-1999. At present, Ettinger is Professor of Psychoanalysis and Art at the Media & Communications Division, European Graduate School (EGS), Saas-Fee.

Clémentine Deliss (GB/FR) is an independent curator, researcher and publisher. She studied art in Vienna and holds a Ph.D. in social anthropology from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. From 1992 to 1995, she was the artistic director of the festival "africa95”. Since 1996 she has produced the writers' and artists' organ “Metronome”. She has acted as a consultant for the European Union in Dakar and has held guest professorships at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo. Since 2002, she has directed “Future Academy” at Edinburgh College of Art, an international research collective investigating the global future of the art academy. Her theoretical interests include research into bridging mechanisms between artists working in different parts of the world, the status of the verbal in today’s art practice, and curatorial modalities that go beyond the exhibition.
