In the arts, 'newness' is a much-desired quality, but it is also a curse. The avant-garde is 'dead' and the 'cult of the new' is past its peak. The pursuit of total originality and absolute renewal has made way for notions such as remix and postproduction, eclecticism and syncretism. Is new still possible, how new is neo and how renewed is retro? By examining the concept 'new' in the light of 'old' subjects such as virtuosity, beauty, knowledge, entertainment and radicalism, the series of lectures entitled THE OLD BRAND NEW intends to rescue 'new' from its tarnished image and illuminate it in all its complexity. Partners in the project are de Appel, arts centre, research group Art Practice and Development at the Amsterdam School of the Arts, Dutch Art Institute, Gerrit Rietveld Academie, LISA, If I Can't Dance., Springdance and the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam. THE OLD BRAND NEW kicked off Thursday June 21 during the Holland Festival.
