Jan De Cock "DENKMAL 10"

18.04–19.10.2003
de Appel, Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 10, Amsterdam

phase I: April 18 through 27, 2003 phase II: May 9 through October 19, 2003 ‘DENKMAL 10 is planned as a seven-month project. During this period, Jan De Cock (Brussels, 1976) will build up an interactive situation between the space, the work and the spectator. The first step will be a solo exhibition lasting only ten days, during which time the whole building will be at the artist’s disposal. The constructions on show during these ten days will also form the initial basis of De Cock’s cibachromes - transparencies of fragments of his work mounted on light boxes - which he will place in the building at a later stage. Together with a semi-permanent installation, these will provide a background to work by other artists to be shown in the course of the year. Jan De Cock is one of those artists who does not dedicate himself to a single discipline but seeks out the frontiers between art, photography and architecture. He develops projects, each consisting of a series of multiple figures, certain facets of which recur in subsequent works. His modules of rough timber are radical and recall architecture models. The installations have an uncompleted character and radically invade the surrounding space. They force the visitor to sit down or to make circuitous movements. Some installations are viewable only from platforms, so that a different aspect comes into focus from each viewpoint.’ (Press release De Appel)
