‘In 1986 a Royal Palace was built in Kortrijk (Belgium) out of six kilometres of textiles. Stage designer Sven Use created a labyrinth in which stories were staged in theatre, dance, video, music and visual art. Souvenirs of the Heart was a production on a grand scale as the videotape made for the occasion bears witness. For the ten days, in which recordings were made, there were improvizations by theatre makers, musicians and visual artists around the theme of one figure, a king. The king was both a rich and a poor man because he could not remember anything. So that he could be a part of existence others had to fill in the world of his imagination with dancing, painting, writing and making music. At the screening of Souvenirs of the Heart, Gerrit Timmers (director) and Noud Heerkens (director of video) will talk about the background and realization of this (video) production which De Appel presented in New York.’ (‘Sunday afternoons: Souvenirs of the Heart - Gerrit Timmers & Noud Heerkens’, Newsletter De Appel, 2 (1987) 2.)
