27.06–05.07.1986
de Appel, Prinseneiland 7, Amsterdam
June 27 and 28: performance; through July 5: installation β€˜I want purely to reproduce what happens around me in a language of forms which concerns architecture, technology, smell and hearing. I have constructed a machine for De Appel in which movement and continuity examine each other. The installation gives the illusion of a space; an object which is manufactured in a minimal way and is on the edge of what is scientifically possible. Velocity and light are used as a contrast to the space. They are visual elements in themselves because I believe that one can only talk in terms of visual art if the work is about Existence. You must define for yourself what there is to see. For me, it’s important to investigate what is real, that is to say: the reliability of the definition. We determine everything by giving names and functions. The frame around and indistinct truth is a truth itself and, seen thus, the frame's usual ability to define is too weak. Again: you define what you see yourself. Can it be the way it is, as we think it is, it is the presence of, the the unknown and the unrecognizable. The horizontal is wiped out by sound, one can’t avoid it. On the way, in total darkness, behind the origin, towards the sound.’ (Huub Cox, 'Het Ongeduur, Anno 0, nr. 4', Newsletter De Appel, 1 (1986) 3.)
