On Saturday 12 October, we will celebrate together the community of Amsterdam Nieuw-West through the unveiling of a new artwork on the facade of the Podium housing complex, located at Schipluidenlaan and Willem Frogerstraat. This artwork is a unique collaboration between de Appel's Teen Curators, artist Narges Mohammadi, and word artist Zeinab El Bouni.

The artwork, consisting of the hand-drawn tapestry If you know, you know... by Narges Mohammadi and the poem 5713 by Zeinab El Bouni, depicts young people's memories of their high school days and their experiences of growing up in Nieuw-West. It is an ode to the neighbourhood and its stories and memories. This work is the culmination of ten months of the Teenage Curatorial Programme at de Appel where the group have visited and researched art in public spaces in different cities and the history and contemporary context of Amsterdam Nieuw-West incorporating it into the work in collaboration with the artists.

From 2pm onwards we welcome you along Willem Frogerstraat 137 with a festive program curated by the Teenage Curators. Enjoy inspiring spoken word performances, compelling stories, and live music. You are also invited to participate in creative workshops.

Unusual Encounters
The unveiling on 12 October is part of Unusual Encounters, a series of gatherings aimed at bringing together people who might otherwise never meet. The theme of this edition is “Hope and Connectedness. In addition, the event is also part of 24 Hours New West, a dynamic program full of activities in the neighborhood.

About the Teen Curators
The Teen Curators are: Oumaima, Haifae, Hajar, Yahya, Ibrahim, Duahan, Safae, Irem, Ayman, Menna, Beyda, Ferat. Over the past seven years, de Appel's education program has collaborated with various communities in New West. From a close collaboration with Comenius Lyceum and Calandlyceum, the Teen Curators program was born. With the Teen Curators program we want to engage young people (15-19 years old) who often do not see themselves and their interests reflected in the art and culture presented in formal art spaces and institutions.

De Appel guides this group of young people in creating their own programs and exhibitions. For the artwork, the young people studied art in public spaces in different cities and researched the history and contemporary context of Amsterdam New West. To create the artwork, they took workshops from different art professionals.

The artwork was developed in collaboration with LEVS Architects, De Nijs and VPT Versteeg. The Teen Curators program is supervised by David Smeulders, Fouad Lakbir and Ka-Tjun Hau and is supported by the Zabawas Foundation and Fonds 21.
