What is Kijk!?

Kijk! (Look!) is a photography course for children from neighbourhoods in Amsterdam. The children make photographs of their environment based on a theme relevant to their neighbourhood. Over the course of ten weeks the children work towards creating their own exhibition, which shows the theme as through their eyes. This sixth edition of Kijk! shows safety through the lens og children from Slotervaart and has been developed in collaboration with De Appel. Chahid, Anass, Noa, Fatima, Hafssa, Zion and Romaisa show us what the theme safety means to them in their own neighbourhood.

The Kijk! course incorporates the following elements: introduction to photography, introduction to journalism, neighbourhood media, media wisdom and the making of your own exhibition. The children visited the exhibition of Hiwa K at De Appel and enjoyed a workshop by journalist Anouk Kemper (LINDA.meiden, Het Parool). The photos by the children were bundled in an exhibition designed by graphic designer Barend Wildschut.

On January 20, 2018, the exhibition was opened by neighbourhood police officer Sebastiaan Wesphal and photographer Ebru Aydin in De Appel. From the 13th of April, the exhibition as on view in the Amsterdam Amstelland (Nieuw-West Zuid) police station and in May the exhibition travelled to Café Casa Sofia. The Kijk! exhibition travels both within and outside of Slotervaart which allows the photographs to be seen not only within the neighbourhood but also outside of it.

 Collaboration parters
Kijk! always collaborates with different partners. This sixth edition was formed by a collaboration between Magneet foundation, VoorUit and De Appel. Every Kijk! course was managed and catered by photographer Vera Duivenvoorde, coordinator and founder of the project, and guided by students Iris Vanderheyden and Veerle Hamerlinck. These students have been recruited by VoorUit, a participation project through which students do social work in their neighbourhood.
Kijk! has been made possible by the AFK, city district Amsterdam Nieuw-West and city district Amsterdam Oost.
