Gabriella Okoobo
Description
Gabriella Okoobo is a lens-based artist currently doing a work placement in production and archiving at de Appel. In her artistic practice she uses photography as a point of departure to investigate questions of memory, human value, and the histories and contemporary realities shaped by Western domination. Through (archival) research, fieldwork, visual culture, and material experimentation, she attempts to develop works that extend beyond the photographic image into tactile and affective forms. Her practice emphasises the importance of systems, geographies, and materials. In her latest project, Beneath Fertile Soil, she explores the relationships between migration, land, and belonging through self-portraiture, reflecting on how histories of trade, movement, and exchange become embedded in materials, bodies, and landscapes.
