The Prix de Rome, which was instituted two hundred years ago by Louis Napoleon and accommodated in the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam in 1870, is the Dutch art and architecture award for artists under the age of 35. Its purpose is to trace talent and to pinpoint trends in an international context.
Previous Prix de Rome laureates include Jan Sluijters (1904), Joep van Lieshout (1992), Alicia Framis (1997) and Viviane Sassen (2007).

An international, independent jury of experts, chaired by Kestutis Kuizinas, long-listed ten artists for the PRIXDEROME.NL 2009: Maze de Boer (b. 1976, the Netherlands), Rosella Biscotti (1978, Italy), Nicoline van Harskamp (1975, the Netherlands), Rob Hornstra (1975, the Netherlands), Heidi Linck (1978, the Netherlands), Ólafur Ólafsson (1973, Iceland) with Libia Castro (1969, Spain), Marc Oosting (1976, the Netherlands), Sara Rajaei (1976, Iran), Helmut Smits (1974, the Netherlands) and Jasmijn Visser (1983, the Netherlands).

The four finalists, Rosella Biscotti, Nicoline van Harskamp, Ólafur Ólafsson and Libia Castro and Sara Rajaei created new work that is presented in exhibitions at Witte de With and de Appel. The winner will be chosen from these four artists and will be announced on May 28.

The publication PRIXDEROME.NL presents individual portraits of ten young and talented artists, with particular attention to the four finalists.

De Prix de Rome, tweehonderd jaar geleden in Nederland ingevoerd door Lodewijk Napoleon en in 1870 ondergebracht bij de Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, is dé kunst- en architectuurprijs van Nederland voor kunstenaars onder de 35 jaar. De prijs is gericht op het traceren van talent en het signaleren van trends, in een internationale context.
In het verleden werd de prijs toegekend aan kunstenaars als Jan Sluijters (1904), Joep van Lieshout (1992), Alicia Framis (1997) en Viviane Sassen (2007).

De internationale onafhankelijke vakjury, onder voorzitterschap van Kestutis Kuizinas, selecteerde voor de PRIXDEROME.NL 2009 de volgende tien kunstenaars: Maze de Boer (1976, NL), Rossella Biscotti (1978, IT), Nicoline van Harskamp (1975, NL), Rob Hornstra (1975, NL), Heidi Linck (1978, NL), Ólafur Ólafsson (1973, IS) en Libia Castro (1969, ES), Marc Oosting (1976, NL), Sara Rajaei (1976, IR), Helmut Smits (1974, NL) en Jasmijn Visser (1983, NL). Zij vormen een afspiegeling van de Nederlandse kunstpraktijk en worden door de jury gezien als de meest interessante jonge kunstenaars op dit moment.

De finalisten Rosella Biscotti, Nicoline van Harskamp, Ólafur Ólafsson en Libia Castro en Sara Rajaei realiseerden nieuw werk en presenteren dat in tentoonstellingen in Witte de With en de Appel. Uit deze vier kunstenaars wordt de prijswinnaar gekozen die op 28 mei bekend gemaakt wordt.

De publicatie PRIXDEROME.NL presenteert tien individuele portretten van getalenteerde kunstenaars, met bijzondere aandacht voor de vier finalisten.
